The program sets aside a small budget each year to seize time-sensitive opportunities that can provide large-scale emission reductions.
In 2017, for example, the program made grants to support global energy efficiency improvements in cooling equipment in collaboration with other philanthropies. These grants complement a global agreement to phase out potent heat-trapping gases used in cooling equipment. Enabling this once-in-a-generation global redesign of cooling technologies to simultaneously boost efficiency and phase out harmful gases can save families and businesses money on their electric bills, improve standards of living, boost the economy, and improve electric grid reliability.
