Two books that are part of grantee TERC’s Storytelling Math series have been awarded the 2021 Mathical Book Prize. The prize recognizes outstanding fiction and literary nonfiction for youth ages 2-18 that inspires them to see math in the world around them.

In the pre-K category, the award went to Lia and Luís: Who Has More?, authored by Ana Crespo and illustrated by Giovana Medeiros. The Animals Would Not Sleep!, written by Sara Levine and illustrated by Marta Álvarez Miguéns was recognized in the K-2 category. Both are part of Storytelling Math, a new series of books for young children that celebrates math, diversity, and the power of storytelling.

The Storytelling Math series, supported by the Heising-Simons Foundation, is developed by TERC, in partnership with Charlesbridge Publishing. Each book features children using math in their everyday adventures as they play, create, and make discoveries.

The Mathical Book Prize is awarded by the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI), in partnership with the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), and in coordination with the Children’s Book Council (CBC). The prize is selected annually by a committee of preK-12 teachers, librarians, mathematicians, early childhood experts, among others.
