New Documentary Film Follows Researchers Writing a New Chapter for Women Scientists

Gender discrimination continues to significantly affect women in science. Picture a Scientist, a new documentary film by directors Ian Cheney and Sharon Shattuck, follows a group of researchers who — through lived experiences and perspectives — provide insights on how to make science more diverse, equitable, and open to all.

The film features geologist Jane Willenbring, chemist Raychelle Burks, and biologist Nancy Hopkins and is being released nationwide on June 12th in select theaters virtually, after being invited to the prestigious 2020 Tribeca Film Festival.

The Foundation’s Science program seeks to address gender inequities in physics and astronomy, and is supporting the film’s production, outreach and distribution with a $325,000 grant. Cyndi Atherton, director of the Science program, notes: “by sharing these experiences, these women show how we can improve and collectively change the climate and culture in science for the better.”
