The melt from Greenland’s ice sheet already accounts for 25 percent of global sea level rise (double Antarctica’s contribution), and its share is growing under the strain of human-driven global warming.

The Heising-Simons Foundation has supported an ambitious multi-million dollar project to install the first Greenland Ice Sheet/Ocean Observing System site at the Helheim/Sermilik glacier-fjord system. The project, co-led by grantee partners Dr. Fiamma Straneo of Scripps Institution of Oceanography at San Diego and Dr. Leigh Stearns at the University of Kansas, aims to increase scientific understanding of the impact of glacier melt on oceans.
