The Heising-Simons Foundation and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation have announced the recipients of the Giving Code Learning and Experimentation Grants, which include 20 local nonprofits serving Silicon Valley’s diverse residents.

The Giving Code is a groundbreaking report that revealed local community-based organizations’ struggles to keep up with a rising demand for services, paying office rent, and retaining employees––despite the region’s astounding growth in philanthropic giving. The report identified several reasons why a gap in giving exists, including that there are very few intermediaries between nonprofits and philanthropists, that nonprofits lack knowledge and information about philanthropists’ goals, and that nonprofit leaders and potential donors operate in different social networks.

Driven by these findings, the Heising-Simons and David and Lucile Packard foundations created a donor-advised fund within the Los Altos Community Foundation to support projects that help build connections between nonprofits and philanthropists. This past December, the recipients were finalized and grants totaling $809,452 were awarded to local organizations responding to challenges and opportunities identified in the Giving Code report.
