News & Stories Foundation President and CEO Sushma Raman to Speak as Part of Stanford’s Effective Philanthropy Learning Initiative Share By Madeleine Perkins on 3/27/2024 on 3/27/2024 Heising-Simons Foundation President and CEO Sushma Raman will speak at the Effective Philanthropy Learning Initiative (EPLI), hosted by the Stanford Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society (PACS), from May 1-3, followed by a virtual component May 8-10. EPLI is a 6-day executive-style learning course for philanthropy professionals. The course will cover: Donors’ values and focus areas for giving. Social problems, their causes, and strategies for solutions. Contemporary trends in philanthropic practice. Historical and societal contexts of philanthropy. Relationship-, community-, and trust-building. Strategies for governance and managing family dynamics. Governance and vehicles for structuring gifts. Causes such as racial justice, democratic institutions, and global giving. Ms. Raman will be joined by Dr. Robert Ross (President and CEO, The California Endowment), Dr. Melissa Berman (Founding CEO (Emerita) of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors), Paul Brest (Professor, Stanford Law School, former president of the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and co-author of “Money Well Spent: A Strategic Guide to Smart Philanthropy”), and more philanthropy researchers and leaders. Prospective participants should complete the application found here by March 31, 2024. The application will ask participants to respond to questions and confirm their availability and commitment to the program. Cohort sizes are limited to ensure in-depth learning and effective networking with peers. The Certificate of Effective Philanthropy is awarded upon completion of EPLI.
