Barbara Chow is the director of the Education program at the Heising-Simons Foundation. In 2018 she authored a GrantCraft leadership series paper called, “From Words to Action: A Practical Philanthropic Guide to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.” That paper dove into challenges and opportunities to explore how diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) can become more integrated into grantmaking practices and broader foundation ethos. In this new interview, Barbara discusses what has and hasn’t changed in the philanthropic field with respect to DEI practices, and also reflects on lessons learned from a new Foundation initiative called Families Lead California, which necessitated “a near wholesale change to the way we sourced and evaluated grants.” Read the interview here.
