How Maximum Security Inmates Took on Cambridge in a Debate About Nuclear Weapons — And Won The Washington Post, April 20, 2019 How did a team of incarcerated students win a debate about nuclear weapons against a storied debate team from the University of Cambridge? This article goes deep behind that win, which was made possible by the Bard Prison Initiative, an inmate educational program supported by the Foundation’s Community and Opportunity program. California Lags Behind Other States in Quality and Access to State-Funded Preschool EdSource, April 17, 2019 California ranks 14thin access to preschool for 4-year-olds, behind Oklahoma, Vermont, and Florida, among others. The data comes from the 2018 State of Preschool Yearbook, which is published annually by the National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER) at Rutgers University. NIEER is supported by the Foundation’s Education program. How Generation Citizen Uses Action Civics to Empower Students, Grow Lifelong Citizens and Combat Inequality LA School Report, April 16, 2019 Generation Citizen helps schools adopt civics education that “empowers students to find a problem in their community and work together to solve it.” The organization is supported by the Foundation’s Community and Opportunity program. The Old Comprehensive Immigration Reform Model Is Dead. And, That’s a Good Thing. Medium, April 11, 2019 “If we’re serious about securing justice for families and about creating an immigration system that works for the country, it cannot happen under a model in which immigration policies are framed around criminalization, punishment, and exclusion,” writes Marielena Hincapie, head of the National Immigration Law Center (NILC). Here It Is, the First-Ever Image of a Black Hole Los Angeles Times, April 10, 2019 Andrea Ghez, an astrophysicist at UCLA who has been studying supermassive black holes for two decades, comments on the first-ever image of a black hole, discovered by the Event Horizon Telescope team at Harvard University. Dr. Ghez’s work is supported by the Foundation’s Science program. Reporters Committee Seeks Mueller Report Grand Jury Material Variety, April 1, 2019 The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press (RCFP) has filed a legal brief to obtain an order that would release the grand jury material in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation.
