Here are some news items that have featured our grantees in February 2019. There’s Nothing Natural About Natural Gas San Francisco Examiner, February 20, 2019 Grantees the Building Decarbonization Coalition and the Rocky Mountain Institute are quoted in this article about how the Bay Area is trying to curb its reliance on natural gas, which represents a substantial percentage of human-caused carbon emissions. Both organizations are supported by the Foundation’s Climate and Clean Energy program. ‘If Beale Street Could Talk’ Puts The Mass Incarceration Issue On The Big Screen Deadline Hollywood, February 16, 2019 “Through the film, we gain a glimpse into the relentless fight, unconditional love, and advocacy shown by women fighting the criminal legal system on behalf of their loved ones in the United States,” writes Gina Clayton-Johnson in a guest column for this media outlet. Ms. Clayton-Johnson leads the Essie Justice Group, which is supported by the Foundation’s Human Rights program. How to Cut U.S. Emissions Faster? Do What These Countries Are Doing. New York Times, February 13, 2019 What would happen if the United States “adopted seven of the most ambitious climate policies already in place around the world”?This series of infographics explore the answer to that question. The infographics were developed with help from Energy Innovation, a consultant to Climate and Clean Energy grantee the Aspen Global Change Institute. Rapid-Response Telescope Team Shares Greatest Hits From ZTF Sky Scanner Yahoo News, February 7, 2019 This article highlights some of the early discoveries astronomers are making thanks to the Zwicky Transient Facility, a new project led by professors Shri Kulkarni and Thomas Prince at Caltech. Their work is supported by the Foundation’s Science program. Cleaner Classrooms and Rising Scores: With Tighter Oversight, Head Start Shows Gains New York Times, February 4, 2019 This article about a Head Start preschool program in Jacksonville features early childhood education experts from the University of Virginia, Mathematica Policy Research, and the University of Michigan, all supported by the Foundation’s Education program. The article also quotes Ron Haskins at the Brookings Institution, a co-author of a pre-K consensus statement about the current scientific knowledge about pre-K education, supported by the Foundation’s Education program. Dem’s bill expands gun background checks The Topeka Capital-Journal, February 1, 2019 This article mentions grantee Fund for a Safer Future’s 2015 national survey that indicated that 22 percent of gun purchases in the previous two years had been made without a background check.
