Earlier this week, education news site The 74 featured an opinion piece co-authored by Kimberly Brenneman, program officer for the Foundation’s Education program. The piece outlines the importance and potential upside of empowering families and communities to fulfill their critical role in the math education of our youngest learners.

Over the past two years, the Heising-Simons Foundation, the Overdeck Family Foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Robert R. McCormick Foundation, the CME Group Foundation, the Skeebo Foundation, and Education First have been crafting a road map to advance family math in the context of cultural and structural barriers that prevent families from engaging in math activities. Family-serving organizations, community organizers, researchers, communications experts, and philanthropists were engaged throughout this process. As we say in the article, “our goal is to ensure that all children and families, regardless of background, have access to the culturally responsive math opportunities needed to close achievement gaps.”
